Late drama at Pant Newydd sees Flint Mountain snatch all three points against Halkyn United

After completing a convincing midweek victory over Hawkesbury Bell, attention turned this weekend's clash against reformed Halkyn United. Many of the Flint Mountain squad were eagerly awaiting this clash as they had signed from Halkyn this season. The Mountain were forced into making three changes from the side that beat Hawkesbury, as Ryan Roberts replaced Lee Evans in goal, whilst Scott Forrester returned from suspension and Shane Owens from work commitments to replace Jake Williams and Tom Heppleston.

Mountain started sluggishly and Ryan Roberts, on his debut, was quickly called into action with a smart save to deny Halkyn. Halkyn soon found themselves ahead though. Former Mountain striker Sean Wilkes collected the ball outside the penalty area, before turning and firing low into the bottom corner. The deficit was increased a few minutes later, when Halkyn played a ball through the Mountain defence, allowing their striker to slot home.

Against the run of play, Flint Mountain did get get themselves a goal through Shane Owens. A ball down the right eventually found Lee Messham, who crossed into the box, where Owens arrived late at the back and headed the ball back across goal and into the net. Halkyn rallied and quickly found a third goal to ensure they had a commanding lead going into half time. A long ball forward was not defended, which allowed the Halkyn striker to run through on goal and slot into the net.

At half time, Mountain looked to counter the threats posed by the Halkyn attack with a defensive reshuffle. Ricky Bennett was introduced in place of Ryan Jones, allowing Shane Owens to drop back into his usual defensive spot. Bennett's energy and enthusiasm was immediately evident as the second half started and he had a hand as Flint Mountain grabbed a second. Bennett made a slide tackle and the ball rebounded forward. Mountain striker Jimmy McGlone chased after it and managed to beat the goalkeeper, where he easily rounded the keeper and found the net. This goal gave Flint Mountain some confidence and soon after, the scores were level. Rob Rush picked up the ball in the second half, before playing a tantalising ball into the area. No defender was able to deal with the low cross, but Lee Messham made a late dash into the area and prodded it into the net at the far post.

The action was not over, as Halkyn suddenly sprung back to life with a goal of their own. After a Mountain attack was broken down, Halkyn countered down the left, where the player beat his marker, before firing across Roberts and into the far corner. Halkyn could have added a fifth, but for the reactions of Rob Rush, who managed to make a goal line stop after the ball had beat Roberts. With twenty minutes to go, Lewis Evans was introduced to replace Alex Millington, taking up a spot on the wing.

With time running out, Mountain were throwing everything at Halkyn, and found their equaliser with just two minutes of time remaining, thanks to a massive stroke of luck. Halkyn looked to have stopped an attack by Flint Mountain, but their defender found himself in trouble just in front of his goal. Lewis Evans applied pressure and as the defender went to clear, the ball hit Evans in the thigh and went into the net. That equaliser gave Flint Mountain some momentum as they then pressed for a winner. With just moments of the game left, Lee Messham won a corner. From the corner, the ball was played long into the penalty area. At the back, defender Matty Howard headed back across goal and Jimmy McGlone rose high to head a looped effort into the goal and score his second goal against his former club. Shortly afterwards, the referee blew the whistle to end an enthralling match and confirm all three points would return to Wat's Dyke Way with the visitors.

Next up for Flint Mountain is a quick turnaround and a midweek trip to face Mynydd Isa Spartans at the Argoed on Tuesday evening. Mynydd Isa are unbeaten in their opening league game and Mountain will be looking for a similar result as today.
