After being given a free date in midweek, Flint Mountain were eager to get their league campaign underway with a tricky away trip to face Mold Town United. Mold had come into the game on the back of a 2-0 midweek victory over Bradley Park. Mountain featured four debutants in their line up, as Kieran Farr partnered new club captain Damon Griffiths in defence, with Tom Heppleston in midfield and Jimmy McGlone leading the line.
Mountain started with intent and after twenty minutes, broke the deadlock with a neat move. Tom Heppleston exchanged passes with Richie Hughes, whose backheel return pass fell right into the path of Heppleston, who then fired low into the bottom corner for a goal on his debut. The lead did not last long, however, as Mold capitalised on their height to score a header from a corner. With half time baring down, Mold then grabbed the lead. Again using their set pieces to their advantage, Mold used a long throw to score another header.
In the second half, Mountain looked to dominate the proceedings and look for an equaliser. After some great play, a ball forward found the path of Jimmy McGlone. McGlone was able to round the goalkeeper and slot home into the empty net to also score a debut goal. As time ran out, Mountain thought a hard earned point was on the cards, but a goalkeeping blunder from Mountain 'keeper Ricky Bennett gifted a third goal to Mold. A long shot towards goal was mishandled by Bennett, who then fumbled the ball into his own net. As Mountain then went all out attack in search of another equaliser, Mold counter attacked after winning the ball back and scored with almost the last kick of the game. Mountain will certainly feel that this was two points dropped.
Next up for Flint Mountain is a first home game of the season on Tuesday evening, as we welcome league newboys Hawkesbury Bell to our new home in Sychdyn. Both sides will be looking for their first points of the season, with Hawkesbury losing their first two games.
