After back to back victories at home against Mold and Offa Athletic, Flint Mountain looked to build upon those results against a new look CPD Sychdyn. Sychdyn come into the game on the back of a midweek defeat against Mold. After the performance last week, Mountain were unchanged, whilst welcoming Chris Layne and Lee Messham back onto the bench. Layne had been named on the bench in other games but was only fully ready to return to action this week, after sustaining an ankle injury in pre season.
Sychdyn started the game much brighter and it took only four minutes for them to go ahead. They took full advantage as two Mountain defenders slipped, leaving them unable to clear the ball, as it was played to the edge of the area. From that position, the striker skilfully bent the ball into the bottom corner. Mountain had the lion's share of the possession throughout the half but could not make any use of it. With twenty five minutes gone, Sychdyn had a golden chance to double their lead from the penalty spot. After racing through on goal, Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett clumsily brought down the striker. From the resulting penalty, Bennett made amends, as he got a strong hand on the ball to his left before the ball was hacked away.
Sychdyn continued to threaten throughout the first half and again could have furthered their lead as they had a goal disallowed. After a long ball was played over the Mountain defence, two Sychdyn players raced through on goal. After initially allowing play to continue, the ball was squared to the other player who rolled the ball into the net. The referee then blew up for offside for initial ball, much to the anger of the Sychdyn players. Mountain were still ineffective as the half fizzled out.
As the second half began, Mountain were very quick to start as they pressed for an equaliser. As they had been unable to find their way through, Lee Messham was introduced to replace Tom Smith in an attacking change of formation. Despite the change, it was Sychdyn who grabbed the second goal on the hour mark. From a corner, Ricky Bennett got a hand to the ball to push it away from goal, but was pushed in the process. Sychdyn stayed alert to the play as Mountain switched off, and they easily played the ball back into the area and then into the net, unchallenged.
With the game going against them, Mountain then threw caution to the wind, as they replaced Alex Millington and captain Craig Jones with Scott Forrester and Chris Layne. Lee Messham then had a chance to get a goal back, as he used his pace to break into the penalty area, but firing straight at the keeper who palmed the ball away. With time running out and Mountain pressing for a goal, Sychdyn then finished the game off with a third goal. Playing a through ball towards goal, Ricky Bennett raced out of goal, but he collided with Shane Owens as the Sychdyn striker lifted the ball over him and into the net.
Flint Mountain will now not have a game for the next two weeks so the next game will be on the 26th September against GAP Connah's Quay Reserves, looking to bounce back from this disappointing defeat.
Man of the Match: Leon Pickford. Pickford used his position well, getting forward and putting constant pressure on the Sychdyn left back, whilst also getting back and defending when needed.
