After two consecutive home games, Flint Mountain were once again forced to use the facilities of Rhydymwyn FC in order to welcome the visit of Offa Athletic. Offa are a reformed team and have joined the league for the first time this year. With Keiron Moore and Lee Messham unavailable, Flint Mountain were forced to revert to a 3-5-2 formation to accommodate the available players. Lewis Powell and Rob Rush come into the starting line up, with Powell making his first start of the season.
The game started with a much lower tempo than in previous games. Despite having the majority of the possession, Flint Mountain could not make much use of the ball, as the Offa goalkeeper was on hand to sweep, catch and collect any through balls played forward towards him. Mountain were well in control of the game, when after 25 minutes, Offa opened the scoring against the run of play. From a throw in, the ball was thrown into the penalty area too easily. The striker stayed alert and worked himself into space. Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett raced out to attempt a save but the striker managed to fire past him from a tight angle.
That goal would prove to be the wake up call that the Mountain needed, as they began to attack with purpose. It took only four minutes before Mountain were level. Breaking down the right hand side, wing back Leon Pickford played the ball to captain Craig Jones inside the penalty area. Jones then passed across the face of goal where striker Richie Hughes was waiting and he made no mistake from close range, slotting the ball underneath the goalkeeper. No sooner had Flint Mountain levelled the scoreline before they then took the lead. The move come from a great team move, starting from the back with the ball moving from right to left, where it found Shane Owens in an advanced position. Owens then delivered a low cross in the penalty area, where it was met by striker Nathan Eccleson. Eccleson controlled the ball, before turning and firing into the net. Offa would have been happy with the scoreline going into half time, but two minutes before half time Eccleson struck again to increase Mountain's lead. The two Mountain strikers linked up well as Richie Hughes played the ball to Eccleson, who with his back to goal, managed to swivel and fire into the corner.
With Mountain seemingly in control of the game at half time, it was expected that Offa would attempt to mount a fightback in the second half. Offa did just that, taking advantage of some flat, sloppy play and should have been level. Having got space in the Mountain penalty area, the Offa striker shot straight at Bennett. Bennett could only parry the shot back into the path of the striker but the ball was scrambled away for a corner at the last moment. After being forced into making another couple of important saves to deny Offa, Mountain looked to have weathered the storm and added to Offa's woes by adding a fourth goal after 65 minutes. After picking up the ball on the right hand side, Leon Pickford looked up before delivering a pinpoint cross for Nathan Eccleson to meet with his head, guiding the ball into the net to grab a deserved hat trick.
With that goal and a three goal margin, manager Stuart Buxton made two changes to freshen up the side for the remaining 25 minutes. Making their way to the bench were Tom Smith and Alex Millington, to be replaced by Mike Edwards and Scott Forrester in respective straight swaps. The game looked to be fizzling out as time ran out before Eccleson then added his fourth goal of the game with ten minutes remaining. Shane Owens crossed the ball into the penalty area from the left, where Richie Hughes controlled the ball. Hughes then teed up Eccleson to smash the ball past the Offa goalkeeper, leaving him no chance. With that goal, the final substitution was made, as Rob Rush was replaced by Buxton himself, to see out the last few minutes of the game.
Next up for Flint Mountain is yet another home game, where CPD Sychdyn will be the visitors to Rhydymwyn. Sychdyn are unbeaten after three games so far this season. The game will also see the games return to Saturday for the first time this season for Flint Mountain.
Man of the Match: Rob Rush. Rush's return to the defence saw an injection of pace to the defence, where he was called upon on more than one occasion to deny Offa Athletic goal scoring opportunities. Rush's enthusiasm also aided the side to build their confidence throughout the match.
