Mountain Collapse To First Defeat Of Season

Robert Moore21 Aug 2015 - 23:06

Flint Mountain surrender a two goal lead to fall to a first defeat of the season against Connah's Quay Tigers

Due to ongoing issues regarding the pitch at facilities at Dock Road, this 'home' game was moved to Rhydymwyn FC. Flint Mountain come into the game on the back of another win over local rivals, Castle Park. Once again, the Mountain were forced into a reshuffle to accommodate for players missing due to various reasons. With the available players, a switch back to a 3-5-2 formation was employed. Returning to the starting line up were Leon Pickford and Richie Hughes, in place of missing Keiron Moore and Lee Messham.

The start to the game was perfect as Mountain quickly looked to stamp their authority onto the game. Within three minutes, Mountain were leading. Nathan Eccleson, fresh from his four goal haul against Castle Park, beat the offside trap and raced onto a flick on from fellow striker Richie Hughes. Eccleson reached the ball before the out-rushing Tigers goalkeeper and lifted the ball over him and into the empty net.

With fifteen minutes gone, Richie Hughes then had the perfect opportunity to double the lead. Hughes ran through one on one with the goalkeeper after being played through, but his shot was straight at the Tigers' goalkeeper, making it an easier save. The disappointment was short lifted, as after twenty minutes of the game, Mountain did double their lead through wing back Leon Pickford's first goal of the season. From a corner, the ball was initially cleared, but Alex Millington played the ball back to Mountain captain Craig Jones on the right. Jones delivered the ball back into the penalty area. At the back post was Pickford, whose low driven shot could not be kept out by the keeper.

At this point, Mountain were in complete control of the game, only allowing Tigers to attempt long balls which ran straight through to Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett. Mountain then had yet another chance to further tighten their grip on the game. On this occasion, left wing back Shane Owens broke through on goal, again one on one with the goalkeeper. His shot, however, was again straight at the goalkeeper, allowing them to clear away. As the half was approaching it's end, Tigers suddenly sprang to life, getting themselves a goal after thirty eight minutes. From a Flint Mountain corner, Tigers cleared the ball and began to counter attack with pace. They managed to evade tackles from Mountain players until they got the penalty area. Once there, they managed to get past Bennett before hitting an effort from a tight angle which found the corner of the net.

That goal sparked Tigers into life, as their equaliser came just a couple of minutes later. From a sustained amount of Tigers' pressure, there was a goalmouth scramble. As the ball broke out from that, a shot was fired straight back into the crowd. Mountain centre back Mike Edwards flung himself at the ball, but the ball hit his arm and the referee pointed to the spot. The penalty was fired low to Bennett's left and despite him getting a hand on the ball, he could not keep it out.

Mountain realised at half time that they needed to find their rhythm again if they were going to get any points from the game. Within minutes of the restart, they should have regained the lead. Richie Hughes rose high and headed a pinpoint cross past the goalkeeper, only to be denied by the post, as it then trickled along the goal line and away from danger. That only served to stir up Tigers again, as they started to control the game. Mountain started to make more and more mistakes, giving Tigers more and more control. Half way through the second half, Tigers had completed the turnaround and had taken the lead for themselves. As the striker raced through, pursued by Mountain defender Ian Wynne, he turned Wynne in the penalty area, before firing a shot into the far corner.

Mountain looked to change their fortunes, introducing the newly re-signed defender Jamie Foulkes at right back in a change of formation to a 4-3-3 formation. Shortly afterwards, Troy Wilson was also introduced, replacing Alex Millington as they pressed for an equaliser. Jamie Foulkes had then been booked for his own handball offence, before Mountain found some momentum, and chances. Nathan Eccleson was first, reaching a through ball ahead of both defender and goalkeeper, but his shot trickled just wide. With just seconds remaining, Mountain had the ball in the net, only to be denied by a dubious offside decision, much to their dismay. Tigers then held on the secure what would be a deserved victory, based on the full ninety minute performance.

Man of the Match: Ricky Bennett. Bennett looked much more assured between the sticks for Mountain this evening, making several important interceptions from through balls. Bennett was unfortunate not to save the Tigers penalty, as he got a hand on the ball and Mountain also benefited from his improved kicking.
