Keiron Moore bags four goals as Flint Mountain complete as resounding victory over bottom placed CPD Sychdyn

After several attempts to play this game, which were thwarted by the weather, Flint Mountain were finally able to play this must win game against the league's bottom side, CPD Sychdyn. Mountain were able to welcome top goalscorer Richie Hughes after two games away, replacing Sean Wilkes who was unavailable due to family commitments. With several players also unavailable due to working commitments, there were spaces in the starting line up for Ryan Jones, Keiron Moore, Rob Rush and Adam Humphreys.

Although considered clear favourites in the game, Mountain were sluggish throughout but were able to open the scoring after only five minutes. From a corner, Craig Jones whipped in the ball towards the front post. Winger Chris Layne met the ball unmarked and had an easy header which found the net. Mountain should have doubled their lead soon afterwards, but both Keiron Moore and Richie Hughes could only hit the crossbar. Sychdyn then had a golden chance to equalise but were thwarted by Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett. Having beat the defence, the striker beat Bennett but he was able to scramble back and clear the ball off the line.

Sychdyn's enthusiasm was quickly subdued though, Keiron Moore scored a quick double. Firstly, Richie Hughes picked up the ball in the Mountain half, before helping it on towards Moore. Moore had managed to evade the offside calls being made by Sychdyn and raced through on goal. Once into the area, he calmly slotted the ball across into the net. Then only a few minutes later, he was again given an easy chance to score again. Once again, Hughes was provider as his header sent Moore through on goal. The Sychdyn goalkeeper raced out to clear but somehow missed the clearance, allowing Moore to tap in to the empty net.

Mountain were unable to break through any further in the first half and were left to find more chances in the second half. With only a few minutes of the second half played, Sychdyn's chances were significantly reduced as they were forced to play the remainder of the game with only ten men. Mountain's player/manager Stuart Buxton was guilty of a late, rash tackle on a Sychdyn midfielder, who could no longer continue. Unfortunately, Sychdyn had not named any substitutes and so were unable to replace him. Ten minutes into the second half, Mountain restarted their free scoring as Keiron Moore returned the favour with an assist for Richie Hughes. His ball forward was controlled by Hughes, who then expertly lofted the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Only a minute later, Sychdyn were able to grab what was to be their only consolation goal. In a similar style to our own opening goal, the Sychdyn striker found himself unmarked at the near post to head home under no challenge. The goal did nothing to faze the Mountain players, as a few minutes later they again extended their league. Right back Leon Pickford picked up the ball on the flank and delivered a teasing ball into the penalty area. Arriving in the area to meet the ball was Keiron Moore, who merely steered the ball past the goalkeeper to get his hat trick. Moore wasn't finished there, as he then grabbed his fourth goal of the game. This time, left back Ryan Jones played a lofted ball to Moore in the area, who controlled the ball before firing a low drive home.

With the points almost certainly sealed, Flint Mountain introduced some fresh legs to the proceedings, as Aaron Austin moved up front as Adam Humphreys made way. Austin was immediately involved in the passage of play which lead to the next goal. This time, Craig Jones played a ball to the ever marauding Pickford on the right who burst into the penalty area, before thumping a shot in the net.

Mountain continued to look for further goals, but missed several attempts on goal before earning a penalty just a minute from time. Rob Rush made a mazy run through the Sychdyn defence from his own half. Once he was in the penalty area, he was clumsily bundled to the ground by a tired defender. Rush expressed a wish to take the penalty himself, but the task was given to midfielder Alex Millington. Millington had not scored for the Mountain all season but confidently stepped up and buried the ball low to the goalkeeper's right hand side.

Next up for Flint Mountain is another must win game, where they make the short trip to Halkyn to face struggling Halkyn United Reserves. A victory for The Mountain will seal third place in the North East Wales Football League, what will be their highest ever league finish.
