Flint Mountain went into this game on the back of a morale boosting victory in the NEWFA Horace Wynne Cup semi final against Connah's Quay Tigers. Today's opponents were title chasing Aston Park Rangers, who fell to defeat against The Mountain in the earlier league clash. Once again, Flint Mountain were forced into making changes to accommodate missing players. As part of the changes, in defence, Leon Pickford returned from being ineligible in place of Ryan Jones, whilst Rob Rush could only arrive after kick off so Craig Jones dropped back to left back. Filling in for Jones in midfield was Josh Griffiths, who had also been ineligible for our previous game. Nick Longridge was also unavailable, so Lewis Powell was able to return to the starting line up.
The game against Connah's Quay Tigers had seemed to take a lot out of the Mountain players, as they struggled to break down a stubborn and organised Aston Park Rangers. Flint Mountain had goalkeeper Ricky Bennett and stand in left back Craig Jones to thank as half time approached. Firstly, a header from Aston's striker was well saved by Bennett. As the half progressed, Aston managed to beat the Mountain defence and also beat Bennett. However, Jones was able to get back and clear the ball off the line.
Into the second half, Mountain never really got going as Aston continued to pressurise the defence. Mountain looked to get into the game themselves by introducing Keiron Moore in place of Josh Griffiths. Shortly afterwards, Mountain looked to steady the defence. To do that, Rob Rush replaced Alex Millington, with Rush moving to left back and Craig Jones moving into his more favourable central midfield role.
With twenty minutes to go, Aston finally managed to break down the resilient Mountain defence. From a free kick on the outside of the penalty area. The tame direct free kick somehow squirmed underneath Bennett as he attempted to save. Mountain then had their best chance of the game to equalise. Craig Jones played the ball to substitute Moore, who could only fire high and wide from a good position.
From there, Aston were quickly able to quell any chance of a Mountain revival. Breaking down the right, Aston used their pace to beat a tried defence and score the vital second goal. As the game neared it's end, Mountain defender Tom Smith was forced off through injury leaving Mountain with only ten men. Aston capitalised on this, putting the game to bed late on with a third goal following a goalmouth scramble.
Next up for Flint Mountain is a must win clash against the league's bottom side, CPD Sychdyn. The game comes only three days after this game, on Tuesday evening at Dock Road.
