Deeside Claim Derby Spoils

Deeside Claim Derby Spoils

Robert Moore15 Apr 2015 - 20:49

Flint Mountain once again slip up against their rivals and lose further ground in the race for a top four finish in the league

This game between the two rivals who share the ground at Dock Road proved to be an evening to forget for everyone at Flint Mountain. Due to the midweek evening kick off time, Flint Mountain were forced into a reshuffle to allow for players missing through working commitments. Danny Griffiths was unavailable so Keiron Moore shifted back to the left wing slot, with Sean Wilkes making his first start for the club in central midfield. There was also a start for the returning Ryan Jones at left back, but Tom Smith and Lewis Powell could only make the substitutes bench. Also on the bench was Aaron Austin, who had missed the majority of the season through various working commitments.

Flint Mountain started the game the much brighter team and were looking a changed side from the previous weekend. The side was putting massive pressure on the makeshift Deeside defence and should have gone ahead through Keiron Moore. Moore was played through on goal into a one on one chance with the goalkeeper but his effort was straight at the keeper who saved easily. Leon Pickford also went close with a free kick which sailed just over the crossbar.

Deeside were to suffer an early set back as a player was to suffer a bad injury. The player made a tackle on Mountain striker Richie Hughes. The awkward tackle led to the player unfortunately breaking his leg and being unable to continue. Despite this set back, however, Deeside continued to battle and just before the half hour mark, opened the scoring. Mountain left back Ryan Jones held onto the ball in a dangerous position for too long and was dispossessed by Deeside. The Deeside striker raced through on goal and fired past Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett into the top corner. Just two minutes later, Deeside doubled their lead. This time, a long throw deep into the Mountain penalty area was not dealt with. Bennett, who moments earlier had committed the same mistake, raced forward to punch clear but was left in no man's land. With this, Deeside were left with the easy chance to score and did just that.

Flint Mountain looked to rally from this and ten minutes later were back into the game. From a corner swung into the area by Craig Jones, Keiron Moore found Richie Hughes with a pass at the back post and he made no mistake, slotting the ball low into the net.

Into the second half, Mountain were incensed when their appeals for a penalty were turned away by the referee. Keiron Moore was again causing problems on the left. As he got into the box, his heels were clipped by the Deeside defender. He managed to stay on his feet but then was quickly clumsily bundled to the ground. Despite the protests of the Mountain player's protests, no penalty was given.

Mountain were then to make changes to spark a reaction and get back into the game. These were made either side of a pivotal third goal for Deeside. On this occasion, the Deeside striker was able to race through on goal, rounding Bennett and slotting home. Before the goal, Ryan Jones was replaced at left back by Tom Smith and then as the goal was scored, Sean Wilkes, who had shown spirit with his work rate throughout the game was replaced by Lewis Powell. Quickly afterwards, Mountain were forced into their third and final change as right back Leon Pickford was forced off with a hip injury. Replacing him was Aaron Austin, making only his second appearance of the campaign.

As the momentum continued to ebb and flow between the two sides into the last twenty minutes, Deeside were able to put the game to bed with their fourth and fifth goals. From another corner, a Deeside man was left unmarked at the far post and was able to head home under no challenge. The final nail in the coffin come with nine minutes remaining, as Deeside striker and former Mountain player Jay Bowden was able to complete his hat trick.

Next up for Flint Mountain is a must win semi final clash against Connah's Quay Tigers, with the prize being a place in the final of the Horace Wynne Cup. The winner will take on the winner of the other semi final between Cefn Albion and today's opponents, Deeside Phoenix.
