Mountain Lose Ground In League Race

Robert Moore7 Apr 2015 - 07:15

Acton grind out a deserved three points as a lacklustre display ends Flint Mountain's unbeaten run at Rhosnesni High School

With the bitter disappointment of the postponement of the President's Cup final still fresh in the minds of everyone at Flint Mountain, the team looked to put that aside with a trip to Wrexham to play Acton. Acton have been on a good run recently and were now sitting in fourth place, just a point behind The Mountain Men in third. Mountain were again forced to reshuffle the team with Lewis Powell missing, so Keiron Moore moved into central midfield. Filling the gap on the left wing for the game was Danny Griffiths.

It was Flint Mountain who initially started the game the better side. Whilst not having any chances during that period, they did look threatening. Acton, however, slowly worked their way into the game. Their work rate won them the ball as they begs to press. Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett was quickly called into action as he was forced to make a very good double save to deny Acton the opening goal. With half an hour gone, Acton's persistence paid off as they grabbed a goal. From a corner, the ball was not cleared from the Mountain penalty area and from the ensuing scramble, an Acton player was able to find the roof of the net.

It took a further five minutes before Flint Mountain had managed a shot on goal. Chris Layne used his pace to beat two men on the right. He squared the ball to striker Richie Hughes, whose spinning shot narrowly crept wide. Right back Leon Pickford then had a chance from a free kick. His effort was on target but straight at the Acton goalkeeper who ripped the ball over the crossbar.

The second half started much like the first, with Mountain pressing for the equaliser. Despite their efforts, they were unable to trouble Acton as the Wrexham based side again regained control of the game. With 60 minutes played, Mountain made their one and only change in order to turn around their fortunes as Sean Wilkes replaced Rob Rush. Wilkes moved to an attacking position with Craig Jones moving to left back.

As Mountain looked for the equaliser, they were left vulnerable at the back and despite another effort from Danny Griffiths which could not find the target, in the closing minutes in looked more likely that Acton would put the game to bed. After squandering several good chances to do so, Acton managed to grab a valuable three points which sees them rise to third place in the North East Wales League, although Flint Mountain have two games in hand. The first of those games will be on Tuesday evening as they take on Deeside Phoenix in the Dock Road derby.
