Mountain Rally To Win

Mountain Rally To Win

Robert Moore24 Apr 2015 - 11:12

Flint Mountain recover from behind twice to beat a Halkyn United Reserves team full of their first team players to secure third place in the league

Flint Mountain entered this must win game on the back of the comfortable victory over struggling Sychdyn just two days earlier. They were also buoyed by the previous evenings result, with league leaders Cefn Albion beating Deeside Phoenix, ensuring that Flint Mountain would be guaranteed to finish in the top four, allowing them entry to the Clwyd Cup for the first time. A win in either of the remaining Mountain games when also ensure a top three finish, meaning they would avoid playing the league winners from the Vale of Clwyd & Conwy League, Prestatyn Sports FC. On arrival at the ground, it was apparent that this game would be much tougher than anticipated when it was announced that Halkyn United Reserves were, in fact, fielding a full strength first team. Despite the heightened task at hand, Mountain were not fazed. Once again, Mountain were forced to accommodate for missing players. Ryan Jones could only commit to a place on the substitutes bench, alongside Adam Humphreys. Replacing them were the returning Sean Wilkes and Josh Griffiths, who both went straight into central midfield, with Craig Jones moving to left back.

It was apparent in the first few minutes of the half that Halkyn were looking towards the long ball towards their pacey striker. He was, however, well marshalled by Mountain's centre back pairing of Rob Rush and player/manager Stuart Buxton. Both full backs were also in fine form, with Leon Pickford helping both the defence and attack. Neither side were able to find a decent opening until just before the half hour when Halkyn grabbed the opening goal. Mountain though they had stemmed the attack on them, but the ball fell to the Halkyn striker just outside the area unmarked. His low drive managed to fly past the outstretched arm of Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett and into the net.

Flint Mountain refused to be bullied at this point and held continued to battle as the half time whistle blew. As the second half began, Mountain made a change to their formation to try and counter Halkyn, switching to 4-4-2 with Sean Wilkes moving up top with Richie Hughes. Hughes would also drop deep to win the aerial battle from goal kicks. The tactic seemed to work as Mountain began to find more joy going forward. With 57 minutes played, Mountain finally had their equaliser. The Mountain strikers linked up well, as Sean Wilkes controlled the ball and played it between the Halkyn defenders. Hughes picked up the ball on the left hand side of the area and drove forward before superbly lofting the ball over the helpless Halkyn goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Just when Mountain thought they had the upper hand, Halkyn were handed an opportunity to regain their lead with a questionable free kick right on the edge of the Mountain penalty area. Despite Bennett's best efforts in goal, the free kick flew past the wall, clipping the post as it went in. With time running out, Mountain rolled the dice to change their fortunes and introduced both of their substitutes. Making way were Alex Millington and Sean Wilkes and Mountain reverted back to their usual 4-5-1 formation. Ryan Jones moved to his familiar left back spot with Craig Jones moving into the midfield, accompanied by Adam Humphreys.

After Keiron Moore had spurned a good opportunity to equalise when unmarked the area, he made amends by contributing to the eventual equaliser. Moore was able to win a corner and quickly delivered the ball. The in-swinging ball was hit too far of the Mountain players but Chris Layne reacted quickly to keep the ball in play. He lofted the ball back into the danger area where Halkyn headed away, but only to the edge of their area. Arriving onto the ball was midfielder Josh Griffiths, who hit a volley low and hard into the goalkeeper's bottom left corner. From the equaliser, Mountain sensed blood and went for the kill. With just two minutes of the game remaining, Mountain managed to get the invaluable goal to give them the victory. Another ball lofted forward was this time won in the air by Keiron Moore. He headed the ball onwards towards Richie Hughes, who expertly managed to roll his marker before thumping the ball low past the goalkeeper, to the delight of everyone at the Mountain.

After the goal, Mountain looked to protect the slender lead until the eventual final whistle came, with Mountain's David slayed Halkyn's Goliath. The victory also saw Flint Mountain secure a precious third place finish meaning a better looking draw in their first ever Clwyd Cup experience. Next up for The Mountain is the rearranged Queensferry Sports President's Cup Final against league leader Cefn Albion. The game is due to be played at the Globe, the home of Buckley Town FC. We hope you can make it to support your local team.
