After yet another fixture was postponed due to the weather last week, Flint Mountain were quickly back at Dock Road this week to face mid table Aston FC. Both teams are are due to play each other in a cup semi final in a few weeks time, so this first ever meeting could well give a glimpse forward to that important fixture. The Mountain squad was light this week, owed to personal commitments but were still able to field a strong side. Coming in to replace the missing Lewis Powell and Rob Rush were Chris Layne, who had missed the Mold game through suspension and Leon Pickford, who was also making his first appearance of 2015. Both players slotted into their usual positions which meant a slight reshuffle in midfield with Keiron Moore filling his more familiar central midfield role and Danny Griffiths retaining his place on the wing.
The Mountain Men started very brightly and looked to get to top of the game very quickly. They managed to do just that, as with just four minutes played, they took the lead. Danny Griffiths ran the ball down the left flank. He managed to beat his man on the byline before pulling the ball back to striker Richie Hughes, who calmly directed the ball past the Aston keeper at his near post. Only three minutes later, Hughes grabbed his second to double Mountain's lead. This time, Keiron Moore won the ball in the Mountain half. After beating two men he fired a cross field ball for Chris Layne to chase. Layne beat the left back before unselfishly passing to Hughes who made no mistake.
Hughes could have had his hat trick shortly afterwards after two separate attempts were denied by the crossbar. Aston were not proving to be an attacking threat and the only moment of worry was due to Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett losing concentration and almost allowing the ball to roll into his net after missing his clearance kick.
With 35 minutes played, Mountain cemented their dominance of the half with their third goal. A corner from Craig Jones was hit past everyone in the box. First to reach the ball was midfielder Keiron Moore who managed to turn past two defenders. With the chance to cross he decided to take on the shot himself, firing in again at the goalkeeper's near post.
At half time Moore complained of feeling unwell so was replaced by Josh Griffiths. The second half proved to be the Chris Layne show as he bagged himself a fourteen minute hat trick. Josh Griffiths quickly got involved, winning the ball in the Aston half. He passed to his brother Danny, where he played a through ball past the defence to Layne. Layne raced into the box one on one with the keeper and made no mistake as he clinically fired home low to the keeper's left.
Craig Jones again turned provider as his corner found Layne in the six yard area but the goal somehow squirmed into the net as it hit Layne's heel. Then just four minutes later the hat trick was complete. Danny Griffiths again worked his way into the box and played the ball to Layne to easily find the net.
With the game almost over, right back Leon Pickford had a chance to make it seven. The pact full back raced into the box to give himself a one on one chance with the Aston keeper. He looked to knock the ball past the keeper for a tap in but at the final moment the keeper recovered enough to scramble the ball away from Pickford's feet. The win could easily have been by a bigger scoreline but wasted chances meant the game finished without any further goals. Next up for Flint Mountain is the rearranged Horace Wynne Cup second round clash with Sychdyn. Victory in that clash will provide the winner with a semi final spot.
