In what had been a very tumultuous week for everyone involved at the football club, Flint Mountain were finally able to get back to action in 2015 after the Christmas break against third placed Mold Town United. January had so far been very unkind to the Mountain, with three consecutive games falling foul of the weather. Mountain were looking to build upon the improved form before the break, culminating in the derby cup victory over Flint Town United Reserves. With Chris Layne suspended after his sending off against Flint, Danny Griffiths was given a chance to shine at right wing, whilst Rob Rush returned to the starting eleven after injury to replace the missing Leon Pickford. Rush slotted back into his usual centre back position with Tom Smith reverting to left back.
The pitch seemed to stifle Mountain in the opening exchanges, suiting the playing style of Mold much better. Mold quickly took advantage of this and were ahead inside 10 minutes. With a quick counter attack down the Mountain right, the ball was pulled back to a Mold striker who blasted the ball high into the net past Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett. Bennett had already pulled off a number of excellent saves, including tipping the ball onto his post to deny Mold, before Mold grabbed their second. From a corner, sloppy defending allowed a Mold player to nip in at the near post and stab the ball into the net.
The second goal forced Mountain to rethink their approach and made a change in defence, switching Rob Rush to left back and Tom Smith to centre back. The change solidified the team as Mountain eventually grew into the game. After winning a corner out of nothing, midfielder Lewis Powell floated the ball onto the head of striker Rich Hughes, whose powerful header found the net to begin the comeback.
Only five minutes later, Mountain were deservedly level. Keiron Moore, played the ball to fellow midfielder Craig Jones. Jones' faked shot deceived two Mold defenders, allowing him to pass them before firing low to the goalkeeper's left into the net. With the half time whistle almost due, Mountain ensured that they would finish the half in the lead. Lewis Powell was again the provider, passing the ball to Moore, whose side footed effort from twenty yards out beat the goalkeeper low to his right.
Mountain continued their domination from the end of the first half into the second, minimising the chances that were afforded to Mold. The game saw few chances in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, until centre back Tom Smith rolled back the years to give Mountain a two goal advantage. A corner into the Mold penalty area wasn't able to settle and as it is played out, Keiron Moore is able to touch the ball to Smith. Flint Mountain's all time leading goalscorer took the ball and curled a stunning shot from twenty five yards over the out rushing defenders and into the top corner, hitting the post as it flew in.
With twenty minutes remaining, Mountain made their only substitution, replacing an injured Rob Rush with Josh Griffiths. Griffiths slotted into central midfield, moving Craig Jones to the vacant left back position. As the game drew towards it's conclusion, Keiron Moore ended Mold's faint chances of a comeback with his second goal of the game. Striker Rich Hughes played a sublime, outside of the boot through ball, over the top of the defence. Moore raced onto the ball and one on one, slotted the ball home to seal the three points.
This victory gave Mountain their much needed revenge over Mold, who got the better of the Mountain Men earlier in the season in the reverse fixture. The win also saw Mountain leapfrog Mold into third position with two games in hand as they look to chase down both Cefn Albion and Aston Park Rangers at the top of the table. Next up for Mountain is a first away trip of the new year to face Halkyn United Reserves.
