Mountain Complete Double Over Tigers

Robert Moore30 Nov 2014 - 19:28

A confident performance from The Mountain Men secure a resounding 5-1 victory over Connah's Quay Tigers

With the confidence within the squad now firmly in place, Flint Mountain headed the short distance from Dock Road to Connah's Quay High School to face Connah's Quay Tigers. The Mountain Men had already claimed a victory over the Tigers earlier in the season and were looking to complete the double over them. Mountain's only change from the previous week against Flint Town was a start for Ryan Jones at left back in place of Luciano Ciati, who was unable to play due to working commitments.

Mountain started the game in the same fashion as they finished the previous game, with high pressure and pace going forward. After missing a couple of early chances, Mountain eventually took the lead in the fifteenth minute. From a corner, the ball found striker Rich Hughes in the penalty area. He played a low ball to right back Leon Pickford, who drilled his shot into the net. Shortly after though, Mountain were forced into a substitution as winger Chris Layne took a blow to the head. He was replaced by Danny Griffiths in a like for like swap.

Tigers did start to get a foothold in the game as the half drew on and managed to equalise with eight minutes of the half remaining. Shortly after they could have been two goals down, with their goalkeeper tipping a shot onto his post, their goal also came courtesy of a corner, as poor marking lead them to an easy finish.

The Mountain flew out of the traps as the second half began and had retaken the lead within a couple of minutes. Keiron Moore, again starting on the left wing, whipped in a prefect cross for Rich Hughes to score a bullet header past the Tigers' goalkeeper. Just a minute later, Mountain had extended their lead. Mountain captain Stuart Buxton launched a long ball forward towards Moore. He controlled the ball in one movement, leaving the Tigers defender on the floor. He then managed to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball into the empty net.

Those goals seemed to kill the confidence in the Tigers ranks, as they could only manage a solitary decent chance on goal, a low drive which Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett was equal to. Shortly after, Mountain had their fourth and Moore had his second goal of the game. On this occasion, Hughes repaid Moore for his assist by teeing him up for an excellent low volley which flew into the bottom corner. Then as the game was coming to it's conclusion, midfielder Craig Jones completed the rout. Lewis Powell, who had been pulling the strings in midfield set up Jones who found himself on the right edge of the area following a corner. Jones' shot was lifted over the keeper and into the net.

Next up for The Mountain Men is a return to Dock Road and the visit of Aston FC. Aston have been struggling of late and Mountain will be hoping to continue their good form and heap more misery on Aston.
