Flint Derby Provides Another Feisty Stalemate

Robert Moore27 Nov 2014 - 21:30

The Flint derby proves to be another hotly contested game which ends in stalemate at Dock Road

With the momentum building following good recent victories against Halkyn and Castle Park, Flint Mountain returned to Dock Road to welcome rivals Flint Town United Reserves. The earlier derby match between the two sides at Cae y Castell proved to be a highly charged game and this was to be the same. Mountain welcomed Luciano Ciati back into the side a left back as they reverted back to their more usual 4-5-1 formation after a change against Castle Park last week. Tom Smith continued his role at centre back with the ongoing injury problems of Rob Rush. Ryan Jones dropped to the bench, with the similar looking midfield and forward options available.

The game started in predictably feisty manner as both teams looked to gain the upper hand early on. It had been an evenly matched first twenty minutes as neither side could muster a good chance on goal. But on twenty four minutes, the deadlock was broken with a goal from Flint Town. Mountain were unable to clear their lines and as a cross come in, the Flint striker stooped low to head into the corner of the goal unmarked.

Mountain did not let this set back have a detrimental effect on their play and continued to battle hard. As the half began to come to a close, Mountain started to turn the screw. After a couple of corners which did not cause too much trouble, Mountain earned themselves a penalty. The ball was played to midfielder Craig Jones who had found himself on the right hand side. His early cross was aimed at Rich Hughes who had run through on goal. However, as he run through, he was bundled to the ground by the Flint right back, leaving the referee no option but to point to the penalty spot. Midfielder Keiron Moore was given the duties on this occasion and he stepped up and calmly stroked the ball into the goalkeeper's left hand side.

Into the second half and Mountain took the momentum of their equaliser as they continued to heap pressure on Flint Town. With ten minutes of the second half gone, Mountain made their first change to freshen up the attack. Winger Chris Layne was replaced by Danny Griffiths in a like for like swap. The change almost made an immediate impact as Griffiths as his first touch was a shot which narrowly went past the post from a cut back.

Ten minutes later and Mountain made their final changes to try and grab a winner. Goalscorer Keiron Moore was replaced by Ryan Jones on the wing, whilst left back Luciano Ciati made way for Josh Griffiths. It was looking more and more likely that a goal was going to come for the Mountain, with chances falling to Hughes and right back Leon Pickford, but both were unable to find the net. Flint rarely ventured forward towards the end of the game and when they did, the entire Mountain defence were on hand to stifle any chances that came their way.

Next up for Flint Mountain is away trip to face Connah's Quay Tigers. Tigers currently sit just a point behind Mountain in fifth place in the league. Bragging rights were Mountain's earlier in the season as they registered a 3-2 win. They will be hoping for the same next week.
