Mountain Come From Behind To Win Again

Robert Moore12 Oct 2014 - 21:31

Flint Mountain come from behind to win as Acton FC see red at Dock Road.

After battling to win against Sychdyn last week in the Queensferry Sports President's Cup, focus returned to league action and the visit to Dock Road of Acton FC. Acton currently sit one place below the Mountain in 6th place. The starting lineup was kept almost identical to the Sychdyn game with the only change seeing Nick Longridge return to the starting eleven in place of Ryan Bradley whilst Tom. Allen returned to the match day squad for the first time since the opening day of the season.

The elements were to prove to me a hassle for both sides as the heavens opened just after kick off. Acton's tactic of long balls towards the front two strikers almost worked very early on as a shot clipped the top of the Mountain crossbar and went out for a goal kick. Mountain were also looking to use the direct approach feeding balls for striker Rich Hughes to feed towards fellow striker Chris Layne. Layne had a couple of chances to run through on goal but to no avail.

With the rain still pouring, Acton took the lead on 19 minutes. With a long ball forward, central defender Rob Rush missed his opportunity to clear the ball, allowing the Acton striker to go through one on one. With Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett already committed and out of his goal, the striker cooly lifted the ball over Bennett's head and into the empty net.

The lead was almost doubled a few minutes later. A tackle on the edge of the area flew towards goal and despite Bennett having slipped, he somehow managed to get a hand to the ball and deflect it onto the post and out for a corner. Mountain responded to this and changed their approach, getting the ball down and passing through the Acton ranks. Mountain had already piled on the pressure by forcing two corners in quick succession before the equaliser came four minutes before the break. Midfielder Craig Jones broke through the middle and laid off the ball to Rich Hughes on the right flank. He beat a man and passed back to Jones who smashed a shot from the edge of the area. The ball flew towards goal and clipped the underside of the bar with the Acton goalkeeper well beaten.

At half time Mountain were forced into a change as Rich Hughes left for personal reasons to be replaced by Tom Allen who was making only his second appearance of the season. The second half started slowly until Mountain took the lead ten minutes into the half. Right back Nick Longridge found himself up near the Acton penalty area and delivered a cross which was met at the back post by left winger Lewis Powell. Powell, on his home debut, stooped low to head into the net to score his first goal for the club. Shortly after, right winger Keiron Moore was forced off the pitch with an ankle injury with Ryan Jones replacing him.

The major talking point of the game come after 67 minutes. After several tough and late challenges which had gone unpunished by the referee, it was a lesser offence which ultimately saw Acton see red. After a foul was given against the Acton striker, the red mist descended and he verbally abused the referee with the referee showing the red card. The referee was forced to stop the game for a couple of minutes as he also sent an Acton spectator from the field after they had encroached onto the pitch. The decision seemed to rile Acton as they continued with their rough tackling. It was a relief that no Mountain players were injured.

With 18 minutes remaining, Mountain made their final change in order to secure the points. Lewis Powell was replaced by Ryan Bradley with Bradley taking his usual position of right back and Nick Longridge taking Powell's place in midfield. The final few minutes belonged to Acton as they chased an equaliser but to no avail. Striker Chris Layne also found himself in the referee's notebook as he was shown a yellow card for blocking a free kick, despite him not looking at the ball and facing in the wrong direction.

This win sees Mountain remain in fifth place, closing the gap on the teams above, whilst opening a gap to Acton, who remain in sixth place. Next up for Mountain is a Dock Road derby, as Mountain are the away side as Deeside Phoenix also play their games at Dock Road.
