Bennett Back On Form In Thrilling Derby Stalemate

Robert Moore1 Oct 2014 - 15:28

There was action galore despite no goals in this rearranged local derby at Cae y Castell.

This week Mountain returned to league action. The fixture list had seen Flint Mountain due to face off against Halkyn United at Dock Road but they were unable to fulfill the fixture. Flint Town United Reserves had also suffered the same this week and so the two teams were paired for this local derby. Flint Mountain were without winger Chris Layne and full back Ryan Jones for this game, but were able to recall Rob Rush, Rich Hughes and Nick Longridge to the starting eleven. There was also a start in midfield for new signing Lewis Powell.

The game started with the same passion and intensity you would see in Premiership derby matches, ironically playing on the same day. Flint had the better of the opening exchanges but a well marshaled Mountain midfield and defence coped well with the attacks, forcing Flint to speculative long range efforts which didn't trouble Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett. Mountain were not without their own chances, but were constantly thwarted by the referee's whistle, blowing up for offside decisions. The first real chance of the first half came with 10 minutes of the half remaining. A mazy run by a Flint midfielder got him past several Mountain players before firing a shot from the edge of the penalty area. The ball rose towards the roof of the net but goalkeeper Bennett was equal to it, expertly tipped the ball over the crossbar.

The last action of the half saw Flint Mountain awarded a penalty. Midfielder Keiron Moore moved into the box and went down under the challenge of a Flint defender. The referee was left with no choice but to point to the spot and the task of taking the penalty fell to regualer penalty taker, Craig Jones. Jones fired low to the left bottom corner, but the shot was very well saved by former Mountain goalkeeper Luke Robinson, in goal for Flint.

The second half continued to proceed in the same way as the first. Both teams were getting good chances to open the scoring but to no avail. Mountain keeper Bennett was the savior as he made save after save throughout the half to deny Flint. He was finally showing his quality again after several questionable performances in which his goalkeeping has led to conceded goals.

At the other end, firstly Keiron Moore raced through one on one, but after doing the hard work of bypassing the Flint defense, his final shot went wide of the post when he should have scored. Striker Rich Hughes was also very unlucky. He saw his effort from 20 yards hit the top of the bar and fly go out for a goal kick, with the Flint goalkeeper watching helplessly.

Mountain looked to grab the points by replacing debutant Lewis Powell with Adam Humphreys, whilst full back Ryan Bradley made a late cameo appearance, replacing Moore and slotting into defense. The game ended all square and was probably a fair result.

Next week sees Mountain enter yet another cup competition. The annual Queensferry Sports President's Cup sees Mountain paired against Sychdyn, with the game due to be played at Watts Dyke Way. Mountain will be looking towards cup glory this season and this could be the perfect opportunity to start.
