Aston Park See Red As Mountain Prevail

Aston Park See Red As Mountain Prevail

Robert Moore24 Sep 2014 - 22:13

Aston Park Rangers contribute to their own demise as Flint Mountain claim all 3 points at Dock Road

With the thoughts of last week's poor performance against Mold Town United still fresh in the minds of everyone, Flint Mountain headed back to Dock Road to face current second placed side, Aston Park Rangers. Mountain were without striker Rich Hughes after his two goals at Mold, so Byron Taylor led the line on his own.

It was Aston Park who started the game much the brighter, getting forward and forcing Mountain into giving away an early corner, although it luckily amounted to nothing. Mountain rode the pressure created by Aston Park for the first 15 minutes but then eventually found their own rhythm. Winger Chris Layne, playing against his former team, raced down the wing and got to the byline. He beat the full back and delivered a cross which was met by striker Byron Taylor. Taylor's header was met by the Aston Park goalkeeper who managed to push the ball away from the goal.

Aston Park's heavy approach to tackling was forcing the referee to constantly stop the game, disrupting the flow of the game. Aston Park had their own chances but never really challenged Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett. From a corner, a silly decision from an Aston Park player led to him receiving a yellow card, after a deliberate attempt to handle the ball into the Mountain net.

In the lead up towards half time, Taylor and Layne again combined, but again Taylor's headed effort failed to find the net as it sailed just over the bar. Just before half time, it was Aston Park who took the lead. A simple long ball over the Mountain full back, Aston Park raced forward. Faced against Mountain defenders Ryan Jones and Stuart Buxton, he managed to beat both before firing a speculative effort towards goal. The ball flew towards Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett's near post, but somehow Bennett was unable to keep the ball out of his net, despite getting a hand to the ball.

Flint Mountain were spurred on by this goal, and started the second half just as brightly as Aston Park started the first. After earning a corner, a scramble in the penalty box ensued and the ball found it's way towards goal. The ball did not find the net though, as an Aston Park player flung his hand out to stop the ball crossing the line. Mountain immediately appealed and the referee agreed, pointing to the spot. The referee called over the player involved and shown him a red card for the deliberate handball. The responsibility for the penalty fell to Mountain midfielder Craig Jones. He stepped forward and calmly drilled the ball home, sending the Aston Park goalkeeper the wrong way.

Mountain looked to seize the opportunity that they were now faced with and piled on the pressure. Just five minutes and scoring the equaliser, Mountain took the lead. This time, good play in the center of the pitch eventually saw the ball find it's way down the left hand side. Striker Byron Taylor picked up the ball and passed inside towards midfielder Nick Longridge. He faked a shot before taking a scuffed shot which rolled into the corner of the net.

Despite having the one man advantage, the momentum then swung to Aston Park as they piled on the pressure. It seemed as though they had the man advantage themselves. Mountain looked to bring on fresh legs to counter this threat, firstly Ryan Bradley replaced Ryan Jones in a straight swap at right back, whilst Byron Taylor was replaced by Adam Humphreys. With ten minutes remaining, more fresh legs were introduced, as Aaron Austin replaced goalscorer Nick Longridge. With a couple of minutes remaining, Mountain had a final chance to completely secure the points. With three players in the Aston Park half, substitutes Adam Humphreys and Aaron Austin combined and Austin had a had to bury the ball. Being short of confidence though, he tried to pass the ball again but the defence were able to intercept and clear the ball. Mountain held on though and secured the points.

Next up for Flint Mountain is a second cup tie, this time it's the FAW Trophy and a tough away trip to Caerwys.
