Mountain Let Lead Slip

Robert Moore7 Sep 2014 - 09:39

Despite taking the lead, Flint Mountain were unable to hold on and fall to a disappointing defeat against Mold Town United

With the Welsh Cup now firmly out of the way, the focus for Flint Mountain now switched back to league action and an away trip to play Mold Town United. Both sides had taken points from each other last season and were hoping to do the same. Mountain welcomed new striker Bryon Taylor back to the starting lineup after recent injury and Tom Smith due to work commitments.

Mountain started the game brightly looking to get ahead early on. The first chance come three minutes in. An easy clearing chance was missed by a Mold defender which allowed striker Byron Taylor to pick up the ball and move towards goal. The Mold goalkeeper raced out and was able to make a good save to deny Taylor.

Mountain continued to press throughout the half, controlling the game. In particular, the left side of the pitch was getting lots of joy, with Mold struggling to control winger Luke Walker and left back Tom Smith. The opening come after 20 minutes. Striker Richard Hughes had earlier warned the Mold goalkeeper with a long effort which went wide. On this occasion, the goalkeeper's kick out fell straight to the feet of Hughes. He looked up, and seeing the keeper off his line, fired a long range effort towards goal. His shot flew past the outstretched arm of the keeper and into the bottom corner.

With the lead now in place, Mountain looked to increase the lead and continued their pressing. Both Hughes and Taylor went close with chances, but were unable to find the net. Mold were not out of it, and warned Mountain when the Mold striker raced easily through the center. His low shot was saved by Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett. However, with 5 minutes of the first half remaining, Mold were level. Mold worked the ball down the left. Mountain captain Stuart Buxton did his best to stop the attack, but as the ball was recycled, a simple cross was not prevented and in the area was a Mold player whose header easily found the net.

Into the second half, Mountain's dominance of the game continued with a couple of half chances which amounted to nothing. As the second half progressed, Mold come into the game more and found more of the ball and more space. This pressure eventually amounted to Mold's second goal. Again, Mountain were unable to defend as Mold come forward and a low effort found its way into the net.

Mountain looked to regain their own advantage by introducing substitutes to freshen up the play. Firstly Brendan Roberts replaced Alex Millington in central midfield and then Aaron Austin replaced Byron Taylor up front. With time running out in the game, Mold looked to kill the game off. Mold raced forward and despite a great tackle by defender Rob Rush, the ball fell back to the Mold striker who was able to tap home.

The game was not finished and Mountain wanted to get a point back. Rob Rush got himself injured in the process of the goal being conceded and was replaced by Terry Jones. Mountain went back up the pitch and looked to get back into the game. After a foul was committed, Craig Jones played the free kick quickly. The ball found it's way to the byline and left back Tom Smith pulled the ball back for Richard Hughes to stab home for his second of the game and make it a nervy ending. Mountain again pressed and forced a corner, but unfortunately the referee blew the final whistle before Mountain had the chance to take the corner.

Next up for Flint Mountain is the visit to Dock Road of Aston Park Rangers, who are currently second after victory over Flint Town United. Mountain will be hoping to gain the three points and prevent another defeat, which will harm their league chances.
