After the disappointment of midweek and the first defeat of the season against Cefn Albion, focus now turned closer to home with a local derby against fellow Connah's Quay based side, Connah's Quay Tigers. Games against the Tigers are usually full of action and this one proved no different.
Flint Mountain started this game much the brighter side, dominating the opening 10 minutes. Mountain continued to press and opening the scoring on 15 minutes. Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett punted a long ball forward towards winger Chris Layne. Layne controlled the ball and then used his vast pace to get past the Tigers defence before firing past the Tiger's goalkeeper. It was a great solo effort by Layne.
After the goal, Mountain grew sloppy in their play and after half an hour, Tigers were level. From a corner, the ball was floated trowards goal, where Ricky Bennett, under pressure from Tigers, scored an own goal by punching the ball into his own net.
Before the end of the first half, Mountain were forced into their first substitution. Striker Byron Taylor, in his first start for the club was forced to leave the pitch, still hurting from midweek, where a poor challenge left him with a fractured hip. He was replaced by Brendan Roberts.
Flint Mountain's sloppy play continued into the second half with Tigers outplaying them. Just six minutes into the half, Tigers took the lead. This time, from the each of the area, they unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner.
With 20 minutes remaining, Mountain made their second, and final substitution. Adam Humphreys, starting his first game of the season, was replaced by full back Ryan Bradley, pushing fellow full back Tom Smith into the left wing spot vacated by Humphreys. This change seemed to spur on Mountain, who bucked up their ideas.
Mountain's equaliser came from Layne, who grabbed his second of the game. Striker Richie Hughes played a through ball to Layne who raced through on goal. The Tigers goalkeeper came out to challenge, but despite this Layne somehow managed to scramble the ball home. The goal came at a price though, as the collision with the goalkeeper left Layne unconscious on the pitch for around 10 minutes.
In the last 5 minutes, Mountain continued to press for a winner and eventually found one through striker Richie Hughes. With Tigers on the attack with a corner, Mountain cleared and launched their own counter attack. Substitute Brendan Roberts played a through ball for Hughes, who chipped the ball over the Tigers goalkeeper to secure the win. In the final seconds things turned sour when Tigers had a man sent off for a horrible tackle on midfielder Alex Millington.
Next up for Flint Mountain is another tedious away trip to Wrexham to face Gresford SSC, looking to build upon this comeback victory.
