Opening Day Delight For Flint Mountain

Opening Day Delight For Flint Mountain

Robert Moore12 Aug 2014 - 22:45

Flint Mountain open up the season with a convincing victory over league new boys, Castle Park FC.

With the wait for the new season finally over, Flint Mountain were eagerly awaiting their first fixture. The opening day opponents were Castle Park FC, a new league team formed from Cornist Park FC, who folded in the previous season. Mountain were able to field two league debutants from the start, Rob Rush, who had most recently played for Argoed United and Rich Hughes, recently signed from Halkyn United.

It took a few minutes for Mountain to get into the game with Castle Park having the early possession. Once Mountain got into their stride, they really started to trouble Park. Mountain's main outlet for this was winger Chris Layne, whose pace was terrifying the Park backline. On 19 minutes, it was Layne who got Mountain's season underway. Midfielder Craig Jones played a through ball between the Park Central Defenders to a waiting Layne, who turned a fired past the goalkeeper.

This goal gave confidence to the side, as they patiently passed and tired their opponents. The second goal came ten minutes later. Nick Longridge, filling in at Right Back for this game, made a run forwards and, after an exchange of passes with Chris Layne, fired a low shot which the Park goalkeeper was unable to save, allowing the ball to squirm through his legs.

Mountain continued to press but got lucky when Park should have got a goal back. Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett fumbled a routine catch to the feet of the Castle Park striker, who passed expecting his compatriot to slot into the empty net. His effort though, somehow missed the target and sailed wide.

Unfortunately for Castle Park, this miss would be punished minutes later. Tom Allen made a mazy run through the defence, only to see his low effort be denied by the post. Allen was not to be deterred though, as he got a goal seven minutes before half time. An exchange of passes with debutant striker Hughes saw him with a one on one opportunity, which he seized upon to score low in the bottom corner.

Just two minutes later saw the games' stand out moment. Midfielder Keiron Moore won the ball on the half way line, before seeing the Castle Park keeper off his line and attempted an audacious lob in the style of David Beckham. The ball sailed high over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Into the second half, Castle Park made a change and swapped goalkeeper. This change did not deter Mountain in their quest to add further goals and kill off the game for good. Mountain had already forced two good saves from the keeper, when Craig Jones' corner was expertly met by Rich Hughes, whose header evaded the keeper and gave him a competitive debut goal.

With the game out of sight, Mountain were able to introduce fresh legs to the pitch. The changes saw Aaron Austin, Adam Humphreys and Ryan Jones come onto the pitch to replace Chris Layne, Craig Jones and Keiron Moore. Despite hitting the woodwork a further couple of times in the second half, the sixth and final goal of the game didn't arrive until the final minute. Good work from Tom Allen saw a shot saved but only to be parried to the feet of Nick Longridge, who gladly accepted by tapping the ball home into the empty net.

Next up for Flint Mountain is a first away trip of the season, with a midweek game another league new boy in Cefn Albion. Cefn will surely be a different challenge, with their opening game also finishing with a 6-0 victory.
