Mountain Back To Winning Ways

Goals from Tom Carney, Terry Jones and Lucas Cruz see Mountain to victory over Caerwys in the first round of the FAW Amateur Trophy

After a tough week, with two disappointing performances led to two defeats and an early exit from the Welsh Cup, Halkyn & Flint Mountain were back in action at the weekend with a trip to former foes Caerwys in the first round of the FAW Amateur Trophy. Further injuries had forced Mountain manager Rob Marshall to make further changes from midweek. New signing John Davies was immediately thrust into the starting eleven, while son and fellow signing Louis Davies found a place on the subs bench. There were also starts for Tom Carney and Mark Foster on the wings and Jack James returned to full back.

Mountain were on the front foot straight from the off and had already seen a shot flash over the bar when they took the lead just three minutes into the game. Paul Williams got down the left and delivered a cross into the box. Tom Carney got into the box from his opposite wing and cushioned a volley into the top corner from a couple of yards out for his first Mountain goal. It looked like the floodgates would open when Paul Williams headed against the post shortly afterwards, but the home side held firm while at the other end, John Davies was leading the team from the back and restricting Caerwys. With a couple of minutes left in the half, Mountain had a second. John Davies' long throw was headed back across goal by Owen Davies and Terry Jones was on hand to nod into the net from close range to double the lead.

There was panic just before the end of the half when Caerwys were awarded a penalty. Ste Alcock jumped into his man and barged him to the ground and the referee pointed to the spot. Caerwys stepped up but Danny Stanton was equal to it, guessing the right way and holding on to the ball. In the second half, both teams were cancelling each other out in their attempts to increase the scoreline and it took until the final minutes for more goals. After winning a free kick, Caerwys curled a low shot into the bottom corner from the dead ball to give themselves a lifeline. This did not last long, however, as Mountain went right back up the field to score a third and decisive goal. Down the left, Mark Foster crossed to Lucas Cruz, on as a sub, who found the net at the back post to settle the tie.

Next up, Mountain welcome Lex to Pant Newydd as we look at a third league win of the season.
