With the new season now in full swing, attention this weekend turned to the first qualifying round of the JD Welsh Cup. The Mountain were pitted against Connah's Quay Town, a newly reformed side competing in the North East Wales Championship. Manager Rob Marshall made a couple of enforced changes from the midweek trip to Greenfield, with Sam Jones suspended and a couple of injuries picked up. Leon Pickford and Alex Goundrey both returned to the starting lineup, with Sean Williams getting his first start and Tom Carney made his debut.
The first half was tight as both teams jostled to get in front. Danny Stanton was forced into a good, low save with his feet while at the other end, Paul Williams had the pick of the chances but his low shot was well saved by the Town goalkeeper. In the second half, it was the visitors who took a deserved lead ten minutes into the half. Danny Stanton had already made a stunning save on the line to claw the ball away from an almost certain goal, but could do nothing to stop Town this time. Breaking forward, Town were kept onside and once the call was laid across the box, the ball was smashed low into the bottom corner.
Mountain desperately needed to get back into the game and the introduction of David Walkiewicz as a half time substitution was a catalyst for a turn in the momentum. Getting down the left, he latched onto a ball over the full back, getting to the byline and hitting a low cross across the face of goal. At the back post, Sean Williams somehow missed the ball and a glorious chance was missed. Later in the half, Walkiewicz had two great chances but shot wide on both occasions, with Paul Williams also firing wide past the post. With five minutes to go, the pressure paid off as Pete Martin rose highest to nod the ball into the net at the back post from a Jord Beck corner.
The equaliser meant that the game would go to penalties. In the shootout, a penalty saved and one hit over the bar condemned Mountain to defeat against their lower league opposition.
Next up, Mountain are back in midweek action this week as Mynydd Isa Spartans are the visitors to Pant Newydd in the league, hoping to quickly get back to winning ways.
