After the manner of the defeat to Overton Recreational two weeks ago, Halkyn & Flint Mountain were eager to get back to playing, but a week's break meant Mountain needed to wait until this weekend and the visit of Welsh Alliance leaders Denbigh Town in the FAW Trophy. Manager Rob Marshall gave a debut to new signing Alex Jones, who joined the club earlier in the week, whilst Jimmy McGlone made his return to the starting up.
The opening exchanges were very even, as both teams jostled to get themselves into the lead. It took until the half hour mark for the opening goal to arrive. From a Mountain throw in, the ball was thrown to striker Aled Reece, who did well to hold up the ball against the Denbigh defender, before playing the ball to Sean Williams. Williams took the ball inside before firing a low reverse shot past the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner. Shortly afterwards, Jimmy McGlone's free kick whistled just over the cross bar as Mountain pressed to extend the lead. Just before half time, Denbigh had a great chance to level the scores, but stand in goalkeeper Matty Howard firstly made a smart save low to his left, before quickly charging down the rebound to save and send out for a corner.
In the second half, both teams looked for further goals and it was the away side that grabbed an equaliser with twenty minutes to go. Getting down the Mountain left, a low cross was turned in by the Denbigh striker from close range. The goal seemed to give Denbigh the extra push they needed and ten minutes later, they took the lead. Down the right this time, Denbigh got into the box before playing the ball back to the Denbigh striker, who found the back of the net off the post. Late in the game, Mountain pressed for a second goal. With just moments to go, the ball was played over the Denbigh defence, where Sean Williams connected at the back post, but his shot was wide of the post and Denbigh held on to progress to the next round.
Next up, Halkyn & Flint Mountain welcome New Brighton Villa to Pant Newydd, as they aim to kickstart their league campaign with a much needed win.
