Halkyn & Flint Mountain began their pre-season preparations on Saturday, as they welcomed Holyhead based side Caergybi to Pant Newydd in their first pre-season friendly of the season. Manager Rob Marshall included new signings Shaun Thomson, Matty Howard and Jord Beck into the squad, as well as some trialists.
The visiting side started the better side, but did not really threaten the Mountain goal. Jimmy McGlone was denied an early penalty as well, as he was felled as he got past the goalkeeper. Despite his protests, the referee waved it away. At the other end, Caergybi were awarded their own penalty, when Pete Martin brought down his man. Stand in goalkeeper Matty Howard was not able to keep out the penalty, as the away team took the lead. Martin made amends for his effort shortly afterwards, however. After proving to be a handful at previous corners, Martin directly the ball on target. His initial effort was blocked, but he followed up and slammed the ball into the net.
In the second half, Dylan Roberts was brought down and Mountain had their own penalty. Captain Jake Williams stepped up, he fired wide of the post. Mountain piled on the pressure in the second half and eventually it paid off, as Jimmy McGlone edged the Mountain in front with ten minutes to go. After a corner looked to have broken down, Matty Howard dispossessed a Caergybi player, before delivering a dangerous cross into the area. McGlone met the ball and directed a header into the corner to settle the game.
Our thanks go to Caergybi for making the trip and we wish them all the best for the upcoming season. Next up, Halkyn & Flint Mountain continue their pre-season preparations, as they welcome Huddersfield-based side, Golcar United, to Pant Newydd. We hope to see you there!
