The business end of the season continues to come at full throttle for Flint Mountain this season. Just a week after securing their first ever league title, Flint Mountain were in cup action, as they faced off against their opponents from last week, Connah's Quay Nomads U18s, in the final of the Horace Wynne Cup. With manager Rob Marshall away this week, assistant manager Rob Thelwell stepped into the breach and took the reins for this important game. Without Marc Gunther and Pete Martin, who were both cup tied, Thelwell made some changes from last week's clash, with Mark Williams and Joey Davies returning to partner in central defence, whilst David Walkiewicz started up top.
Nomads started the brighter side and led into four minutes. After Mountain lost the ball in the middle of the park, Nomads broke down the left, before an early shot flew in at the near post, clipping the post as it found the net, leaving Kirk Russell with no chance. Mountain were level mid way through the half, thanks to Jack Aitken. Sean Williams floated a ball into the six yard box, towards Aitken. Aitken leapt and glanced a header into the bottom corner, with the goalkeeper desperately trying to reach it.
On the stroke of half time, Mountain took the lead. After a couple of prior corners, Sean Williams delivered again, finding Joey Davies in space six yards out. Davies controlled the ball, before volleying through the crowd of players into the net. In the second half, the game exploded on the hour mark. Following an altercation, Keiran Farr was shown a straight red card for violent conduct, before the referee then give the Nomads captain his marching orders. From the resulting free kick, Jon Edmonds got into the penalty area, before being clumsily brought down by the goalkeeper, and the referee pointed to the spot. Sean Williams stepped up, but showed his previous form by sending the ball high and wide of the goal.
Jon Edmonds quickly spared Williams' blushes, with a superb solo third goal. Picking up the ball outside the area, Edmonds waltzed through the defence, before firing low into the bottom corner. Nomads were not done and got a goal back with fifteen to go, firing a low shot past Kirk Russell, again off the inside of the post. Despite a late charge, Nomads could not find a way through and Mountain held on to secure a third trophy of the season.
Next up, Flint Mountain take on league runners up Acton in the Premier Cup final on Tuesday evening.
