With last week's draw with Mostyn seeing Flint Mountain miss an opportunity to go top of the league, focus turned to a mouth-watering clash between the league's current top two sides, Flint Mountain and Halkyn United. Despite Halkyn leading the standings, it is Flint Mountain who have had the better of recent games against their rivals, winning the last three games, including a 4-2 win on the opening day of the season at the Northop Hall Pavilion. David James Jones, Damon Griffiths and Karl Griffiths all returned to the starting line up after recent absences, whilst there was also a rare appearance from Lee Messham.

The opening exchanges did little to showcase the occasion, as both sides looked to get a foothold in the game. Despite some good opportunities, the best either side could muster were tame efforts which did little to test both goalkeepers. Both sides continued to cancel each other out and the first half ended with little action to report.

In the second half, manager Rob Marshall looked to exploit a weakness in the Halkyn defence and it paid dividends within minutes of the restart, as Flint Mountain took the lead. The ball was played through to Jack Aitken, who beat his man and got into the penalty area. At a tight angle to goal, he decided to cross, where Lee Messham arrived at the back post, controlling the ball before slamming his shot high into the net, leaving the Halkyn goalkeeper no chance.

That goal seemed to shock Halkyn into action, who were level again just two minutes later. Breaking forward, the Halkyn striker's first effort on goal was well saved by Ryan Roberts, but the ball come back to the striker, who then succeeded with his second effort. Flint Mountain then looked to press forward and were incensed, when Jack Aitken was brought down by the Halkyn goalkeeper in the penalty area. Despite the protests, the referee waved the appeals away.

Aitken continued to attack the Halkyn defence and his persistence paid off when he was awarded a penalty. Taking the ball towards the byline, Aitken was brought down and the referee pointed to the spot. Stepping up was Colin Davies, who calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and restore Mountain's lead. It was Davies' second penalty in as many weeks.

With time running out and Halkyn pressing for an equaliser, Lee Messham was then given the perfect opportunity to secure the win. After a set piece was cleared, Messham was able to run through towards goal from his own half. Once in the penalty area, Messham did not see support with him and took a shot himself, which went straight at the Halkyn goalkeeper. Flint Mountain, however, comfortably held on the secure a massive win.

Next up for the Flint Mountain is another trip to Gresford to take on Offa Athletic in two weeks' time. Offa have already beaten Flint Mountain twice this season and will be confident of a repeat. However, Flint Mountain will be aiming to leave with all three points.
