Mountain Claim Pre Season Win

Robert Moore25 Jul 2015 - 21:33

Flint Mountain's pre season trip to the seaside results in a first win of pre season as they overcome Rhyl Rovers of the Vale of Clwyd League

After an encouraging performance on Tuesday against AFC Brynford, Flint Mountain were looking to build on that as they made the trip down the coast to face Vale of Clwyd League side, Rhyl Rovers. Flint Mountain started brightly and trying to pass the ball around skilfully to open up chances. After being unable to create any meaningful chances, the opening goal came courtesy of a long ball. Defender Mike Edwards, playing in his second Mountain friendly, cleared the ball from the edge of the Mountain penalty area. The ball lofted over the Rhyl defence as stand in striker Keiron Moore raced on to chase. Once he gathered the ball, Moore shrugged off a challenge before drilling a low effort into the bottom corner.

With time running out in the half, Rhyl grabbed a dubious equaliser. A long ball forward was collected by a Rhyl player, who started in a clear offside position. The decision was not given, allowing the striker to knock the ball past Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett and tap into the empty net.

In the second half, Rhyl had much the better play for the first twenty minutes of the half. Their constant pressure caused consistent problems for Mountain as they struggled to get into the half. Mountain had left back Shane Owens to thank, as he cleared a shot off the line from a corner, as Bennett also made several important changes.

After Mountain had weathered the storm, they managed to regain the league midway through the half. Winger Chris Layne raced down the left, beating his marker. After more good play from Layne, he delvered a ball into the penalty area which was met by Keiron Moore. Moore's effort was saved but pouncing on the rebound was Mountain striker Nathan Eccleson, who bagged his second goal in two games. Just a couple of minutes later, Moore was not to be denied a second, as he extended Mountain's lead. Again, Layne down the left was causing problems. The goalkeeper come away from his goal to clear, but the clearance only found Moore, who looked up and curled a long range shot into the empty net.

Layne, who continued to threaten down the left for the remainder of the game, was then fouled in the corner of the penalty area, leading the referee to point to the spot. Moore, on a hat trick, graciously gave the ball to Layne. Layne stepped up, and despite a weak strike, found the net.

Rhyl regrouped and got themselves a consolation goal, as a striker reacted to pick off a misjudged headed pass back to Bennett by the defence to once again give them a chance. Mountain then had several chances to put the game to bed, but to no avail.

Next up for Flint Mountain is a shorter trip to face New Brighton Villa, another higher league opposition, in what will be another test of the team's character.
