After a less than convincing performance in the opening pre season friendly on Friday evening, Flint Mountain were back in action tonight against a strong AFC Brynford side, of the Welsh National League. It was Brynford who started the game much brighter and looking for early goals. With only ten minutes gone, Brynford opened the scoring. After winning the ball down the right, the Brynford striker beat his marker and ran through one on one with Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett, before curling the ball into the far corner.
After the goal, Mountain manager changed the formation to give the defence more protection. It looked as though this change had stopped the Brynford onslaught, but they grabbed a second goal before long. Again breaking down the right, Brynford scored with ease as a low drive beat Bennett.
As the half progressed, Mountain finally grew into the game and started playing the passing football on which they thrive. Just before half time, clever group play involving several Mountain players found Chris Layne unmarked in the Brynford penalty area. Layne made no mistake, drilling the ball low into the bottom corner.
In the second half, Brynford increased their lead early on with a fine free kick which flew into the corner of Bennett's net. Bennett was unfortunate as he did get a hand on the ball. It was then Mountain's turn to test Brynford and got a goal back soon afterwards. Midfielder Keiron Moore was fouled by the outrushing Brynford keeper to earn a penalty, before confidently despatching the ball to the keeper's left.
With time running out, Brynford were forced to make a change as the referee ordered their captain off the field for a deliberate handball. From the resulting free kick, Moore forced a fantastic save for the goalkeeper. Flint Mountain were not behind for much longer, as Brynford again conceded a penalty. This time, new Flint Mountain striker Nathan Eccleson took the penalty, blasting the ball high into the net.
With only a couple of minutes remaining, Brynford were then awarded their own penalty. This penalty could only clip the bottom of the post before being cleared as Mountain held on for a morale boosting draw.
Up next for Flint Mountain is a trip down the coast to face Vale of Clwyd League side, Rhyl Rovers. Mountain will be looking to build on this performance and claim their first victory of this pre season schedule.
