After the late drama of Saturday, Mountain took the confidence gained from the win into this midweek away trip to Wrexham to play Gresford SSC. Mountain were able to welcome back Keiron Moore and Luke Walker into the starting line up after missing the last two games.
Flint Mountain started the game brightly on a bad pitch. Winger Luke Walker went close within the first two minutes when a cross from the right fell to him and his volley fizzed just past the post. Mountain started to dominate the proceeding but were wasteful with the final ball. Several offside calls from the referee were also hampering the chances that Mountain were creating across the pitch.
The main talking point of the first half come mid way through it. Mountain winger Chris Layne committed a foul trying to retrieve the ball. The Gresford player reacted appallingly and kicked out at Layne, yet despite the protests of all the Mountain players, the referee failed to even award a yellow card. To make matters worse, from the resulting free kick, the ball evaded the Mountain defense and landed at the feet of a Gresford player at the far post who slotted home.
The anger created by the controversy spurred on Mountain, who soon found themselves level. Good work down the right by midfielder Keiron Moore, his cross was somehow missed by the Gresford defense and fell to Luke Walker, who kept calm and fired home for his first competitive Mountain goal. Soon after Moore broke the Gresford back line but he missed his one on one chance when the Gresford keeper somehow tipped the ball around the post.
Into the second half, Flint Mountain sensed that the three points were for the taking. They continued with the same intensity as the first half, but still were unable to find the back of the net. With an hour gone, Mountain made their first change, replacing Keiron Moore with Brendan Roberts. Other substitutions soon followed, with Ryan Jones replacing Ryan Bradley in a straight swap at left back and Byron Taylor, still nursing a hip injury suffered against Cefn Albion, replacing Alex Millington.
Mountain's intensity began to drop and Gresford grabbed their opportunity to press their claim for the three points. Mountain were struggling at times during the spell and had goalkeeper Ricky Bennett to be thankful for as with the Gresford striker baring down on goal, he manged a brilliant one handed save to deny them.
Mountain quickly regained their momentum and should have went ahead firstly through Layne, whose one on one chance was fired straight at the Gresford keeper and then through Substitute Taylor, whose golden opportunity to open his Mountain account went begging when his chance also shot straight at the keeper. Finally, the breakthrough came with just five minutes remaining. Craig Jones broke down the left and his cross reached striker Richie Hughes in the area. His shot was sliced but played in Chris Layne who arrived at the back post to slot home and seal the points for the Mountain.
Next up for Flint Mountain is the first cup game of the season, where AFC Brynford will provide the opponents in the first qualifying round of the Welsh Cup. Brynford were recently promoted from the North East Wales League and will provide a tough test to progress into the next round.
