After a victory last week against high flying Aston Park Rangers, attention could now turn to cup action and a first round tie against Caerwys in the FAW Trophy. Caerwys were promoted last season from the North East Wales league so were no strangers to the Mountain Men. Mountain went into the game without both a manager and assistant manager, as well as five first team regulars, leading to a different looking starting eleven. Full back Tom Smith was shifted to center back in the absence of Rob Rush due to injury, with a start for Adam Humphreys in central midfield and usual central midfielder Keiron Moore was pushed forward as a makeshift striker in the absence of both Rich Hughes and Byron Taylor.
Caerwys started the game much brighter than Mountain and were soon ahead. From a free kick, Mountain goalkeeper Ricky Bennett fluffed his catch straight to a Caerwys player who easily slotted home the opener. Shortly after, Caerwys had doubled their lead. This time, Mountain failed to clear their lines from a corner, allowing Caerwys to knock the ball into the net.
Bennett was again in the firing line for the third Caerwys goal. On this occasion, he raced off his line to collect a through ball. However, the ball bounced straight off his legs and into the path of the approaching player who had the simple task of passing the ball into the empty net. Just before half time, Caerwys capped off their fine first half display with a fourth goal. A through ball past the Mountain defence saw a one on one opportunity, and they slotted the ball home past Bennett.
At half time, Mountain looked to stop the rot by changing formations. This seemed to work as they were much the better side in the second half. With half an hour remaining, striker Aaron Austin replaced Humphreys allowing Keiron Moore to drop to his usual position and Austin quickly got involved. An excellent through ball from winger Chris Layne found the path of Austin and despite being low on confidence, he registered his first goal of the season with a tidy finish into the bottom corner. With twenty minutes left to go, Alex Millington left the field with a knock to be replaced by Jordan Rowlands.
Chris Layne almost got another consolation goal as he failed to lob the goalkeeper when one on one but Caerwys held firm for the remainder of the game to secure their passage to the next round.
Next up for Mountain is back to league action, where Halkyn United are the visitors to Dock Road.
